1. Penalties for Unpaid Taxes:

  • Federal: The CRA has increased its penalty for unpaid taxes to 10% of the outstanding amount, plus an additional 2% for each complete month the return is late, up to a maximum of 20 months.

2. Capital Gains:

  • Federal: For capital gains realized after June 24, 2024, 50% of the first $250,000 will be included in your income. Gains exceeding $250,000 will be included at a higher rate of 66.67%.

3. Home Buyers' Plan (HBP) Withdrawals:

  • Federal: The HBP withdrawal limit has increased from $35,000 to $60,000 for withdrawals made after April 16, 2024. Additionally, there's a temporary repayment relief, deferring the start of the 15-year repayment period by an extra three years for first withdrawals made between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2025. Thus, the repayment period begins in the fifth year following the initial withdrawal.

  • The borrowed funds must be in your RRSP for at least 90 days before taken out. Withdraw the money no later than 30 days after the closing date.

4. Basic Personal Amount:

  • Federal: The basic personal amount has increased to $15,705.

  • Manitoba: For 2024, the basic personal amount is $15,780. Starting in 2025, this amount will be gradually reduced for individuals with net incomes between $200,000 and $400,000.

5. Manitoba Tax Credit Programs:

  • Even if you have no tax payable, you may still qualify for various credits, including the primary caregiver tax credit, personal tax credit, education property tax credit, renters tax credit, seniors school tax rebate, and school tax credit for homeowners.

  • Renters Tax Credit: For the 2025 tax year, the maximum credit increases to $575, with a seniors' top-up of $328.

  • Claim Period: Claims for Manitoba credits must be made within three years of the tax year they pertain to. In 2025, you can claim credits for the 2024, 2023, and 2022 tax years.

6. Tax-Free First Home Savings Account (FHSA):

  • Federal: The FHSA allows first-time home buyers to save for a home purchase. Contributions are tax-deductible, and qualifying withdrawals are non-taxable. Annual contributions are capped at $8,000. Unlike RRSPs, contributions made in the first 60 days of the year cannot be applied to the previous year's tax return. Transfers from RRSPs to FHSAs are not deductible.

7. Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit:

  • Federal: This refundable credit covers eligible expenses for renovations that create a secondary dwelling for a senior or person with a disability to live with a relative. You can claim up to $50,000 in qualifying expenses, with a credit of 15%, resulting in a maximum benefit of $7,500 per qualifying renovation.

8. Work-from-Home Expense Deduction:

  • Federal: The $500 flat-rate deduction for home office expenses is not available for the 2024 tax year.

9. Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP):

  • Federal: The CDCP offers dental coverage to residents with an adjusted family net income below $90,000, who filed a tax return in the previous year, and lack dental insurance. Applications are open for seniors (65+), children under 18, and adults with a valid federal Disability Tax Credit certificate for 2023.
